When there is a conflict like this one, there are the ones who wanted it to happen and those who didn't. As a matter of fact, in this situation, the terrorists are the very cause of this event and the firemen, policemen, families that are linked directly or indirectly to this terrrible event are victims. That being said, once again there is a clear distinguishment between those two groups. The speech of president Bush back then somehow triggered an attitude of vengeance towards the talibans, members of Al Qaeda. (Vedantam, 2008, paragraph 8)
The Anti-globalist movement had sent their message, however the response of Bush somehow reinforced the feeling of nationalism/patriotism. This moment is also known as the unifying moment which is part of creating two distinct groups : with the US, against the terrorists or against the US, with the terrorists. It was only a matter of time until hate crimes and prejudice start developping.
This process becomes important when thinking about guilt. In this situation, two groups are opposed, the victims show a deminish of guilt since they were attacked first. Even though vengeance is not a beautiful answer, thus beating fire with fire, George W. Bush Jr. succeeded at convincing the whole population to do such. This is a clear example of the impact of politicians and their crowd control abilities. President Bush took out the guilt from striking back when making it very clear that their group was legitimate, thus decreasing the guilt level and making it easier to follow the president's path, which is not always the best (see conspiracy theory to understand why).
In other words, the war in Irak and Afghanistan was strengthen by remembering what happened on 9/11, which resulted in agreeing with president Bush on declaring war to Afghanistan.
