conclusion
To conclude, 9/11 and its consequences are truly global events and an integral part globalism as they demonstrate the forces of liberal democracies and modern values clashing with those of Islamic jihad and extremism, of which the consequences are global. Islamic terrorism in its brief history has been mostly viewed negatively by scholars and the common populace in Muslim and non-Muslim countries, and retains a very negative stigma in academia for any supporting it. It is the view of the author that mujahedeen and terrorism create unneeded conflicts that increase chaos and disorder while rarely achieving their goal. Another negative aspect is that Western nations like United States and the United Kingdom feel compelled to intervene to stop the forces of the so-called “Islamo-fascists” by “neoconservatives”, often resulting in costly Western operations to secure the country that wind up making the violence, chaos and Islamic extremism worse, such as in Libya and Iraq.
Thus, Western efforts to combat jihad are also far from perfect and they do not necessarily always represent the "good" side. Western supporters of the Mujahedeen during the Soviet-Afghan War and later the Civil War could have easily cut short their billion-dollar funds or strictly supervise their use by Pakistani intelligence so that they are given to moderate factions. Another problem though, was the providing of extremely advanced weapons such as Stinger MANPADs and SAM missiles by the U.S. to all Mujahedeen factions, as well the CIA’s tacit support of more religious/extremist groups in order to counter the modern factions they viewed as closer to the Soviet government. That the United States and its allies directly increased the scope of global terrorism and insurgencies in the 1990s through funding the Mujahedeen movement and in the 20th century with their interventions in the Middle-east is a fact that is hard to refute.

The deaths caused by Islamic terrorist acts are very high, even more so Muslim countries; alienating more Muslim religious leaders and their followers by a method they judge to be ineffective and inhumane. Sunni Jihad now focuses mostly on Shia’ Muslims instead of traditional foes which can be considered proof that Jihad is becoming so extremist and narrow in scope that it will appeal to less and less people. For the time being, terrorist attacks such as those during September 11th remain a possibility and, the ideology of jihad will continue to be important as long as the Muslim peoples continue to harbour strong opposition to Western interference and support of their perceived enemies (Isreal) in the Middle-east and the intrusion of contemporary liberal values in their society, ideas which dominated the Middle-east since the last 30 years of history.
